This popular flavored tea blend has its roots in 1830s Great Britain. As the legend goes, the British Prime Minister Earl Grey II had rescued the young son of a Chinese Mandarin from drowning (or the son of an Indian Rajah from a tiger, depending on who’s telling the story). The grateful father brought him a gift of blended Indian and Ceylon teas flavored with oil of bergamot, extracted from the rind of bergamot oranges. The bergamot orange is not orange! Its skin is green in color and it is rather shaped like a pear. Bergamot oranges are almost exclusively grown in Italy. Probably more than you needed to know about the essential flavoring that makes Earl Grey tea so special, but there it is.

Not all that good. Will not buy this brand again. Going back to Davidson’s Tea. Even though this is a whole leaf tea, and has a good aroma, I find it lacking in taste. It is very weak tasting and bland once brewed. Will not buy this tea again, or, anything else from Coffee Bean Direct in the future. Will be going back to Davidson’s Earl Grey Black Tea, which is far superior.Unfortunately, I now have 2 LB of this insipid tea that I will have to use, as they do not allow returns on this item !Yuck !

However, I’ll have to cancel it now. I use a coffeemaker to brew mine since I drink it all day at work. It used to brew about as dark as coffee. However, starting with the order I got just before Christmas, it was quite a bit lighter. I figured maybe I just didn’t add enough, so I used 1 1/2 times for the next batch. It was still weak looking, so I figured that maybe my coffee…

Nice, but not Earl Grey As others have said, this tea is very strongly oiled. I do not doubt that it is some oil of bergamont, but it seems to be from a source of different quality from the bergamont in Twinings Earl Grey. The scent of the tea reminds one of Twinings Earl Grey (more than, say, lemon scented teas), but it is not really the same in its complexity of flavor as the Twinings Earl Grey. This may be from some cause such as use of black teas from Sri Lanka or India tea in place of black Chinese tea in the…
