What beverage does Italy, Japan, Korea and China have in common? They all love a roasted brew made from barley. In Italy, they brew it dark and rich like espresso. You can order an Orzo anywhere they serve coffee, from the train station to the best espresso bars and trattorias. Italians love to drink Orzo in the afternoon and after dinner for a caffeine-free dessert beverage. The Japanese steep roasted barley like tea and chill it for a cooling hot weather drink called Mugicha. Delicious tea if you tweak the tea/water ratio I first had mugicha tea at a Japanese garden cafe and was so happy to find it on Amazon. The first time I made it, I used the instructions on the package and wow! — it was overpowering in strength. I made it with my French press and it says one to two tablespoons per two cups of water. Waaayyyy too strong. I was looking for the light, subtle flavor I experienced in the Japanese cafe. A lot like real coffee Pretty good for a non coffee beverage. It’s dark like espresso if you make it strong. It looks, feels and almost smells like coffee. It has a coffee like flavor but I won’t say it tastes just like coffee. But it’s satisfying in a similar way.I brewed through a Melita paper filter and was pleasantly surprised with the taste.

Misleading Roasted Barley Roasted barley is misleading. This should have another description. Not sure why a picture of the actual product is not included. Make sure to note that this says filter grind. It looks like coffee and doesn’t come close to tasting like roasted barley used for tea.
